The best time to plant daffodil bulbs is before mid-October, according to the University of Missouri Extension. This gives daffodils ample time to develop roots before soil freezes. Cornell University Home Gardening notes that tulip bulbs may be planted until December 15, but that tulip-bulb size and stem lengths are reduced if bulbs are not planted before December 1.
Daffodils thrive in most well-draining soils, but they prefer a medium-heavy loam, and are suitable for shrub borders, perennial beds and as ground covers. Plant them in a location that receives at least a half-day of sunlight. The University of Missouri Extension recommends planting bulbs in groups of three to a dozen bulbs of one variety for best visual effect.
Although daffodils do not require heavy fertilization, use 2 to 3 lbs. of a complete garden fertilizer when preparing the bed. Mix the fertilizer thoroughly with the soil. Plant daffodil bulbs 6 to12 inches apart and 6 inches deep. Water bed after planting.
