When to Plant Tulip Bulbs in Florida

Tulip bulbs grow better in the Northern states than they do in the South. With special care, tulips can grow and bloom the first year in north Florida. However, they will not bloom a second year. They should be replaced with new bulbs.
  1. Geography

    • The only area of the state where tulips can be planted is northern Florida, from Pensacola to Jacksonville and south to Ocala. This encompasses USDA zone 8.

    Preparation

    • Tulip bulbs will need to be chilled before planting. They require 60 days at 40 degrees F and then 120 days at 50 degrees F. Do not place them in a refrigerator with ripening fruit or else the tulips may not bloom. Ripening fruit produces ethylene gas, which can abort the flower buds. After chilling, plant the bulbs immediately.

    Considerations

    • In northern Florida, tulips bulbs should be planted in December or January. They need full sun to partial shade. Plant the bulbs five inches deep and space them eight inches apart.
