When Should You Plant Potted Tulips Outside?

Although tulips are most commonly associated with Holland, they were cultivated in Turkey as far back as 1,000 A.D. Today, potted tulips in the stores are a sign that spring is near.
  1. Instructions

    • Select potted tulips that have not yet bloomed. Allow the plant to ripen in the pot until the leaves turn yellow and fall flat, watering sparingly. Carefully remove the soil from the bulbs and remove the ripened leaves. Select a location with full sun and fast draining soil. Bury the bulbs three to four times the bulb height, with hairy roots planted downward.

    Time Frame

    • Wait to plant your tulips until the ground is 60 degrees Fahrenheit or cooler. According to the National Gardening Association, those located in hardiness zone 4 or 5 should plant tulips in September or October, those in zones 6 or 7 should plant tulips in October or November, zones 8 and 9 should plant in November or December, those in zone 10 should plant tulips in December or January.

    Considerations

    • Many tulips are now designed to be one-season bloomers and may not grow the next year if replanted.
