Will a Tulip Bulb Planted Upside-Down Grow?

Although tulips are most commonly associated with Holland, tulips originated in Persia and Turkey. The word "tulip" comes from the word "turban," which describes the general shape of the bloom.
  1. Instructions

    • Plant the bulb about 6 inches deep in the soil, with the roots pointed downward. Although bulbs will grow if planted upside down or sideways, the added stress may result in smaller blooms and a delayed sprouting time.

    Identification

    • Tulip bulbs are shaped like a chocolate candy kiss. The roots are located on the bottom flat portion, and may look a little hairy. The top of the bulb is the pointy portion.

    Considerations

    • Plant tulips about six weeks before the first frost. Generally that's between September and December, depending upon your USDA hardiness zone.

    Warning

    • Tulips may rot if planted in soil with poor soil. If your tulips didn't sprout when they should, check the area to see if the bulbs were rotten or if they were eaten by garden pests.
