How to Soak Amaryllis Bulbs

The amaryllis is a flowering plant propagated from bulbs. The bulbs lie dormant until planted in the proper conditions, and many gardening experts recommend soaking an amaryllis bulb just before it is time to place it in the soil. Rather than submerging the bulb in water, you should soak only the roots, to prevent mold from forming. Soaking the roots is believed to stimulate the plant and speed up growth. Most amaryllises take eight to 10 weeks to bloom once the bulb is planted.

Instructions

    • 1

Place your bulb in a shallow plate or bowl in the same manner you would plant it -- with the roots down.

    • 2

Place a small amount of lukewarm water in the bottom of your bowl -- just enough water to cover the exposed roots.

    • 3

Allow the bulb to soak in the water for approximately one hour.

    • 4

Remove the bulb from the water and plant it immediately.
