How to Water Tulip Bulbs

Tulips are extremely hardy and are among the first flowers to adorn the landscape in the spring. In general, tulips need little care to thrive and can be left alone most of the year. They do, however, benefit from a good watering after planting and occasional waterings when rainfall is scarce. If you have potted tulips, note that they'll need water more often. Be careful, though, not to water your tulips too much since they don't thrive with wet feet.

Instructions

    • 1

Water bulbs thoroughly after planting. Water slowly with 1 to 2 inches of water. Tulips are usually planted in the fall.

    • 2

Avoid watering in the winter months. They are dormant and usually don't need additional water to thrive.

    • 3

Water from spring until fall only when you are experiencing drought-like conditions. Tulips usually get sufficient water from rainfall. If it hasn't rained in two or three weeks, especially during the hot summer months, water tulips bulbs with 1 to 2 inches of water.

    • 4

Water potted tulips, if applicable, more frequently; however, allow the soil to dry out between waterings. Water enough so it seeps out the drainage holes. Let the plant dry out in the fall after the leaves turn yellow. Then cut off the foliage and store bulbs in the soil in a cool, dry location such as your garage or attic until spring.
