How to Plan & Care for Canna Lilies

With large, striking foliage and bright flowers, canna lilies add a tropical look to any garden. You can grow this frost-tender perennial year round in mild climates. In cold climates, you can enjoy canna lilies as annuals. Canna lilies grow fast, reaching heights of 2 to 8 feet, depending on the variety, in a single growing season. Plant canna lilies en mass in a sunny location or use them to fill out a border area or a perennial garden bed. Canna lilies love full sun but will grow in light shade.

Instructions

    • 1

Spread a 2- to 4-inch layer of organic matter over the planting bed. Use compost, seasoned manure, leaf mold or composted grass clippings to improve the soil drainage and add nutrients. Work the organic matter into the top 6 to 8 inches of the soil.

    • 2

Dig shallow planting holes that are 3 to 4 inches deep and as long as the rhizome section of the canna lily root. Space the planting holes for multiple canna lilies 12 to 24 inches apart.

    • 3

Place one canna lily rhizome long ways in each hole and cover with 2 to 3 inches of soil. Press down the soil gently over the rhizome with the flat of your hand. Soak the area around each to a depth of 4 inches.

    • 4

Fertilize once a month using a 5-10-5 formula fertilizer. Check the package for instructions on amount and application methods. Apply the first dose in the spring and continue monthly until fall.

    • 5

Remove the flower stalks after the flowers fade. Cut the stalks to the ground using a pair of shears or a sharp knife. Be careful not to damage the leaf stalks. Remove leaf stalks at the ground when they begin to dry and die back.

    • 6

Divide the rhizome clumps in the spring before the new growth begins. Drive a garden fork under a clump and lift it from the soil. Brush off the soil to expose the rhizomes.

    • 7

Break the canna rhizomes into sections. New growth emerges from "eyes" or growth nodules on the rhizome. Break the roots into sections with each section having at least one "eye." Replant the rhizomes in the garden. Divide cannas every two to three years.
