How to Trim Jonquils

Flowers in the narcissus family appear in early spring to decorate a sunny growing area with their cheery yellow and white blossoms. According to the American Daffodil Society, 13 different daffodil divisions exist within the narcissus genus. Both daffodils and jonquils co-mingle within the narcissus family, the names generally being interchangeable depending on your gardening region. After jonquils finish blooming, trim them back to keep your flower garden neat and attractive.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the jonquil stems off just above the soil level after the flowers fade, if you desire. Removing the stems can make the remaining foliage more attractive as you leave it growing to nourish the bulbs.

    • 2

Trim the foliage just above the soil level only after it withers and yellows. Place the removed foliage in a bucket as you trim.

    • 3

Discard the jonquil foliage in a compost bin or in the trash. Do not leave it on the soil because it can contribute to fungal infections in the jonquils.
