How to Add Bone Meal After Planting

Bone meal consists of finely ground or crushed animal bones that have been processed by steaming. This organic soil amendment can be found in your local hardware store or local gardening supply store. Typically applied to the soil before planting, it provides a high source of phosphates necessary for healthy root formation. But, it can be applied safely after planting, as well.

Instructions

    • 1

Apply bone meal to the soil in early spring as soon as the soil has thawed, by sprinkling 1/4 to 1/2 cup of bone meal around the base of the plant. Spread in a ring around the plant allowing at least 3 inches between the stalk of the plant and the bone meal.

    • 2

Work the bone meal into the top 2 inches of soil with a hand trowel or garden claw, using care not to disturb young roots.

    • 3

Apply a second application of bone meal in midsummer for perennials and in the fall for bulbs. Bulbs form roots at this time, whereas perennials are entering dormancy.

    • 4

Add bone meal to the soil after planting bulbs by sprinkling it over the soil and working it into the top 2 to 3 inches of soil.
