When to Plant Canna Bulbs in Zone 5

Cannas are tropical plants with huge leaves that bear lily-like flowers. Gardeners treat them as tender perennials in U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zone 5, where winter temperatures can dip to minus 20 degrees Fahrenheit.
  1. Features

    • Gardeners set potted aquatic cannas in ponds under no more than 8 inches of water. They plant terrestrial cannas in well-drained soil. Both cannas are tropical plants, hardy in USDA zones 7 to 10. For summer bloom, plant rhizomes after all threat of frost passes in spring.

    Time Frame

    • Most of zone 5 is frost-free from approximately mid-May to mid-October, depending on weather trends and elevation. Canna rhizome health demands warm soil and frost-free air.

    Bulbs

    • To ensure bloom in July or August, plant canna rhizomes, often sold as bulbs at garden centers, as soon as possible after the last frost. Aquatic rhizomes, which bloom from July through September, will keep in a cool place; plant them and keep the pots in a cool garage or basement where they will not be exposed to freezing temperatures. Place them in the pond when the weather warms reliably.
