Gardening Information on Oxalis Bulbs

Oxalis, also known as shamrock or wood sorrell, is a woodland plant with clover-shaped leaves and pink or white flowers that will close at night and open the next morning. Oxalis grows from tiny bulbs about the size of a pencil eraser.
  1. Planting Oxalis Bulbs

    • Oxalis will thrive in full sunlight or partial shade and well-drained soil. If the soil is loose, simply push the bulbs about 1 1/2 inches deep into the soil, with 3 to 4 inches between each bulb. Water the soil deeply, then expect to see foliage about six weeks later.

    Digging Oxalis Bulbs

    • Oxalis bulbs will freeze in cold winter climates where the temperature drops below freezing. Wait until the foliage dies down, then remove the foliage and dig the bulbs. Dig carefully to avoid cutting into the tiny bulbs.

    Storing Oxalis Bulbs

    • Oxalis bulbs should be cured before you store them for the winter. Place the bulbs in a dry location for two or three days, then put the cured bulbs in a paper sack or a small box filled with vermiculite. Store the bulbs in a cool, dry room where temperatures will be between 35 and 40 degrees F. Don't allow the bulbs to freeze.
