How to Grow White Spider Lilies

White spider lilies (L. albiflora) are annuals in the amaryllidaceae family and are also known as hurricane lilies. Hurricane lilies bloom during the October hurricane season of each year. Their leafless stems reach 18 to 24 inches in height with white blooms that look like a lily with long anthers that resemble spider legs. Their bulbs are easy to plant and care for and hardy in USDA zones 7 to 10. You can plant white spider lilies as a border or create your own field of spider lilies. With little effort, these beauties will keep coming back each year to display their unusual splendor.

Instructions

    • 1

Find a planting site that receives five to six hours of sunlight daily with occasional shade. The soil needs to be well draining and rich in organic matter.

    • 2

Loosen the soil to a depth of 8 to 12 inches and work in a 2-inch layer of organic compost with a garden hoe.

    • 3

Plant the spider lily bulb in the late summer. Position it upright and push into the soil to a depth of two times the width of the bulb. A 3-inch spacing is typically recommended, but refer to the bulb packaging for exact spacing requirements. Cover with soil. Blooming may not occur until the following fall season.

    • 4

Water your newly planted bulbs thoroughly and maintain a once per week watering schedule unless it rains. The soil should be moistened 2 inches deep.

    • 5

Add fertilizer amounts depending on the size of the bulb bed. According to Arizona State University, you should use 1 lb. of 5-10-10 fertilizer for a 5-by-10-foot area. Refer to the fertilizer package instructions for the most accurate application guidelines for the amount of space in your garden.
