How to Plant Bulbs in Suet Cages to Keep Squirrels Away

Daffodils, tulips and other bulb plants provide dependable color year after year in exchange for minimal maintenance. Unfortunately, squirrels and other pests are attracted to the bulbs as a food source. Protecting the bulbs at planting prevents the squirrels from eating them. Bulb cages protect the bulb from all sides, but you can use suet cages, too. If you have extra suet cages, why go to the expense of buying new bulb cages? Suet cages are constructed to hold seed suet for feeding the birds, but they also are just the right size for bulbs.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig the planting hole to a depth that allows you to set the cage inside with the top of the mesh 3 to 4 inches beneath the soil surface. Make the hole wide enough so the cage can be put into the hole easily.

    • 2

Place the bulbs in the cage so that their pointed ends face upward. Arrange the bulbs in the cage at the spacing recommended for the bulb variety. Depending on the size of the cage, you may only be able to place one or two bulbs in each cage.

    • 3

Set the cage in the hole. Pour soil through the mesh until the cage is filled with soil.

    • 4

Fill the rest of the hole with soil. Water thoroughly so that any air pockets in the cage collapse. Add more soil to finish filling the hole.
