Liatris spicata is a North American perennial growing from corms (small, flattened bulbs). The skinny flower spikes are 1 to 3 feet tall, blooming from the top of the spike, downward. The foliage is grassy.
Liatris corms are available in garden centers in late winter and spring. As soon as the soil can be worked, plant in soil amended with compost and bone meal. A light mulch conserves moisture during summer drought.
Gay feather is also available as a potted perennial in spring. Tired plants can be rejuvenated by dividing the clumps in fall. Once established, liatris is drought-tolerant.
