Do Stargazer Lilies Grow in Georgia?

Exceptionally fragrant, pink-edged and burgundy-spotted crimson blooms make the Oriental lily (Lilium 'Star Gazer') a widely selected choice for home gardens and cut flowers. With adequate soil amendment, Stargazers will grow in parts of Georgia.
  1. Heat Tolerance

    • Stargazers tolerate heat in the Americana Horticultural Society's heat zones 1 to 8, where temperatures reach 86 degrees Fahrenheit or higher up to 120 days per year. Georgia lies in AHS heat zones 5 through 9. Stargazers can survive heat in most of the northern and central state.

    Cold Hardiness

    • Stargazers are cold hardy to U.S. Department of Agriculture Plant Hardiness Zones 4 through 8, with minimum temperatures between minus 30 to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Georgia lies in zones 6b through 8; therefore, Stargazers are cold hardy in Georgia.

    Sunset Zone

    • "Sunset" magazine's climate zone classifications factor cold hardiness, heat tolerance and several other characteristics in determining a plant's suitability for an environment. Stargazer is suitable for Sunset climate zone 32, in the northern one-third of the state.

    Soil

    • Georgia's soils are ultisols, or relatively infertile, acidic forest soils. They're high in clay and low in calcium, potassium and magnesium. With additional lime, humus and drainage-improving organic material like peat moss, Georgia's soils will support Stargazers.
