When to Plant Xanthosoma Bulbs

Xanthosoma is grown as a food crop in Central and South America for its edible tubers. Planting Xanthosoma in the right soil at the right time of year lets it reach maturity in 9 to 10 months.
  1. Spring Planting

    • Plant Xanthosoma in the early spring so that it has plenty of time to grow and reach maturity. Start Xanthosoma plants indoors in large pots if early spring temperatures are too cold in your area, and move the pots onto the patio when the weather warms.

    Tropical Plant

    • Xanthosoma is a tropical plant and won't do well in cold temperatures. Plant it outside or move it outdoors in the spring after the last frost when the soil has warmed and temperatures are expected to stay above 50 degrees Fahrenheit.

    Overwintering Plants

    • Bring the Xanthosoma plant indoors and allow it to go dormant in areas where fall and winter temperatures fall below 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Begin watering again in early spring to encourage the plant to start growing again. Once temperatures have warmed, the plant can be moved outdoors.
