It is important to plant rubrum lily bulbs in a pot large enough with good drainage. Bulbs should be placed 6- to 8-inches beneath the soil. The bulbs do not tolerate standing water. Ensure the pot size accommodates the planting depth and has drainage holes.
The rubrum lily performs well in an organic soil with a pH of 6.5. Lilies do poorly in dry soil. Provide moisture to the plants, especially when roots develop and stems emerge.
Lilies require a complete fertilizer with equal portions of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorus. Feeding lilies throughout the season, as well as placing them in full sun, ensures large flowers.
When the foliage turns yellow, can trim leaves back to the base. For best flowering, store lily bulbs in moist medium at 35 degrees for a few weeks.
Many lily species, including the rubrum lily are toxic to cats. All parts of the plant are poisonous and can result in kidney failure as quickly as 36 to 72 hours after ingestion.
