Information About Elephant Ear Bulbs

Elephant ear bulbs produce a tropical plant well known for huge leaves that resemble an elephant's ear. The bulbs are easy to care for and can be replanted each spring if they are dug up in the fall and stored.
  1. Size

    • The Elephant ear bulb, or corm, has an average size of 2 pounds. They can weigh as much as 8 pounds.

    Planting Depth

    • Plant elephant ear bulbs with the rounded end down at a depth of 2 to 4 inches below ground level.

    Uses

    • The bulb is used mainly as an ornamental plant. The elephant ear bulbs are also cooked to make poi, a popular dish in East Asia and the Indies.

    Warning

    • All parts of the Elephant ear plant are poisonous if ingested. Use with caution around children and pets.
