Amaryllis Has Small Green Leaves But Has Stopped Growing

Amaryllis flowers emerge from bulbs, often potted and grown indoors in places with dark, cold winters where not much, if anything, is growing outside. With proper care, amaryllis bulbs may continue to produce flowers for years. Bulbs you have kept for longer than a year need a rest period before they will flower again. After allowing them their rest, you must water and fertilize them regularly to help them grow and flower.

Instructions

  1. An Amaryllis Bulb in a Pot

    • 1

Plant the bulb in a pot that is 1 inch bigger all around than the bulb. Ensure at least one-third of the bulb is visible above the soil line.

    • 2

Water the bulb and put it in a cool place for six to eight weeks to allow its roots to develop.

    • 3

Move it into bright light but not hot midday sun when the flower stalk appears. Continue to water it.

    • 4

Cut the stalk down to 2 inches after the flower has died.

    • 5

Fertilize and water the bulb regularly, follow the instructions on the fertilizer box.

    • 6

Move the amaryllis outside when all danger of frost has passed. Sink the pot into the garden, making sure the bulb is at the same level as it was in the pot. Give it a sunny but not too hot place.

    • 7

Bring the amaryllis back inside in fall before the first frost. Place it in a cool dark place. Withhold water and fertilizer.

    • 8

Re-expose the the pot to sunlight after it has had a rest of at least three months. Trim off the dead leaves.

    • 9

Water and fertilize it regularly. It will flower again.
