When & What to Feed Amaryllis

Gratifyingly easy to grow, amaryllis (Hippeastrum spp.) is popular with both beginning and experienced gardeners. Although some gardeners discard the bulb after flowering, it will bloom every year with a little TLC.
  1. Fertilizer Selection

    • Amaryllis needs regular fertilization to ensure good flowering every year. Use a water-soluble houseplant fertilizer. A balanced formulation, such as 20-20-20, is best.

    Frequency

    • Amaryllis needs to be fed every two weeks. Applying fertilizer to dry soil can burn the roots, so if necessary, water the plant the day before you expect to fertilize.

    Yearly Schedule

    • Regular feeding should start as soon as the bulb shows new growth, whether leaves or a flower bud. After flowering is finished, remove the flower stems and treat the amaryllis as you would any houseplant. Amaryllis grows well indoors in bright light or outside in shade. Continue feeding it every two weeks with the liquid houseplant fertilizer. In September or October, the plant will signal that it's ready to go dormant with yellowing leaves, so discontinue the feeding schedule at that time.
