When to Plant Ginger Lilies in Louisiana

Ginger lilies, also known as white butterfly ginger lily, are tropical flowering plants, closely related to the plant from which edible ginger is derived. The flowers are as fragrant as their cousins and resemble butterflies, thus the nickname.
  1. Time Frame

    • The best time to plant the ginger lily rhizome in northern Louisiana is early April, after the last frost date. In the southern regions that receive frost, plant the ginger lily in late February. Extreme southern gardeners can plant the rhizome in late winter.

    Planting

    • Grow the ginger lily in an area that receives full sun. Gardeners in the warmer areas of Louisiana should provide the ginger lily with afternoon sun. Amend the soil with compost or manure before planting to provide the growing plant with nutrients.

    Considerations

    • Ginger lily is quite popular in south Louisiana, but it can be grown by northern gardeners. Just be sure to wait until the weather warms before planting, give the plant lots of sun and allow the soil to dry between waterings.
