When Does Gladiolus Sprout?

Fresh cut flower arrangements can be pricey. Growing your own flowers makes having fresh bouquets all over the house affordable. Gladiolus, ranging in height from 2 to 6 feet, are stunning in arrangements as well as in the garden.
  1. Planting

    • Plant gladiolus corms with the pointed end up. The planting depth depends upon the size of the corm: large corms need to be planted 6 inches deep while small corms should be planted 3 inches deep.

    Timing

    • Gladiolus corms are generally planted in the spring. Some gardeners stagger their plantings with early and late season varieties, to have continuous flowers throughout the season. The time from planting until sprouting is usually three to four weeks.

    Considerations

    • During the growing season, the corm will shrivel and die while new corms are produced. These new corms should be dug from the soil in late fall and saved to be planted the following spring.
