How to Water Forced Tulips After They Bloom

When you can't get enough of the vivid blossoms of spring tulips, you can bring the plants inside and force them to continue blooming. By simulating nature's cold and then warmer periods of winter and spring, you can force a tulip bulb to bloom from a container in your home. Water forced tulips after they bloom if you wish to transplant the bulbs outdoors for use in your landscape. If they survive after transplanting, you can enjoy them again the following spring.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Snip off the stem that held the tulip bloom after the flower fades and discard it. Leave the foliage growing in the container so it will continue to nourish the bulb.

    • 2

Move the container to a location that receives direct sunlight.

    • 3

Check the soil daily to see if the tulip needs water.

    • 4

Water the potting soil whenever the top inch of the soil becomes dry. Pour water onto the soil to saturate it evenly.

    • 5

Fertilize the tulip plant once about one week after the bloom fades. Mix the fertilizer with water according to package recommendations. Pour the fertilizer carefully into the container to nourish the tulip. Water the tulip after applying the fertilizer.

    • 6

Remove the remaining foliage only after it withers and yellows. Clip the foliage off with the pruning shears.

    • 7

Transplant the tulip outdoors in spring.
