How to Water a Spotted Calla Lily

It's hard to over-water a calla lily. In fact, they thrive in bogs and in the shallow margins of ponds and garden pools. They are also well-suited to garden beds when the soil is kept moist, and in borders with other plants that thrive in a moist environment. Spotted callas (Zantedeschia albomaculata) grow 3 feet tall with a spread of up to 2 feet. Cultivars provide a range of pastel colors as well as white and most have a purple mark at the base. The white spotted foliage shows well in shady locations. Spotted callas are tender plants that only survive winters outdoors in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 9 and 10. Dig the bulbs and dry them for winter storage in cooler climates.

Instructions

    • 1

Water calla lilies often enough to keep the soil moist. Dry soil encourages the plant to go dormant.

    • 2

Apply water to the soil around a calla lily slowly so that it sinks into the soil rather than running off. Stop when the soil can't absorb any additional water.

    • 3

Withhold water at the end of the growing season when the plants begin to die back to give the plant a dry rest period. A rest period is essential for good flower production next season.
