How to Make My Iris Flower Stems Grow Straight

Irises are called bulb plants, although they actually grow from rhizomes. They produce blade-like leaves and extravagant blooms in the late spring to early summer in most climates. The flowers come in nearly every color imaginable, from yellow and orange to pink and purple, and they bloom on the ends of the long flower stalks or stems. Iris flower stems usually grow straight up, but if heavy flowers cause your stems to tip and fall over, staking them will help.

Instructions

    • 1

Push the stake into the ground next to the iris whose flower stem you want to grow straight. Push the stake into the ground to a depth of 4 to 5 inches deep.

    • 2

Hold the iris stem next to the stake and be sure the stake is straight in the ground. Adjust it if necessary.

    • 3

Tie the iris stem to the stake with the twine. Loop the twine over both the stem and stake and tie the twine with a knot or a bow just tight enough to keep the stem straight.
