How to Plant Daffodils in January

Daffodils are spring flowering bulbs native to Turkey and the rest of Asia Minor. Like all spring bulbs, they need a period of cold stratification, usually two to three months, in order to bloom for the following year. Bulbs survive best in the ground, so if you still have some daffodils sitting around come January, plant them right away. If your climate has a late spring, they may bloom.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a planting location for your daffodils with full sun and well drained sandy soil, if possible. Add 3 to 4 inches of compost to the soil and work it into the soil to a depth of 8 to 10 inches.

    • 2

Dig holes 6 to 12 inches apart and 6 to 8 inches deep.

    • 3

Place one daffodil bulb in each hole. Position each bulb so the roots face downward and the point of the bulb faces upward. Fill the holes with soil. Pat the soil down firmly.

    • 4

Water the soil well for 5 to 10 minutes.
