How to Plant Tiger Lilies

Tiger lilies (Lilium tigrinum or lancifolium) are native to Asia where they have been cultivated for food, medicine and garden ornamentals for centuries. The tiger lily takes its name from its bold orange flowers with brown to black tiger-like markings. Blooming in the summer, the tiger lily thrives in the warm sun within zones 4 through 9 on the U.S. Department of Agriculture Hardiness Zone Map. Plant the tiger lily bulbs in the fall.

Instructions

    • 1

Choose a spot to plant the tiger lilies that receives full sun all day.

    • 2

Pile 4 inches of garden soil and 4 inches of compost over the soil in the planting area. Mix the soil and compost together until it is well combined but allow it to remain raised above the surrounding soil. You can enclose it with pavers, rocks or other items to make it look more attractive. Tiger lilies require well-drained soil and the best way to provide that is to plant them in raised soil.

    • 3

Plant small tiger lily bulbs so that there is 3 inches of soil covering them. Large bulbs require 4 to 6 inches of soil over them. Space the small bulbs 12 inches apart and 18 inches apart for large bulbs. Pack the soil around the roots and the bulb to avoid air pockets in the soil that will dry them both.

    • 4

Water the tiger lily bed until the top 10 inches of soil is moist.
