Amaryllis Bulb Deformities

Amaryllis is generally a pest- and disease-free bulb that should flower reliably. A few common diseases can cause a deformed appearance to the bulbs, leaves and flowers.
  1. Common Diseases

    • A gray mold known as botrytis is one of the few diseases that can affect amaryllis.

The most common of diseases to amaryllis are mosaic virus disease, bulb rot, red blotch and gray mold. In almost all cases, prevention and sanitation are the keys to prevention and cure.

    Prevention

    • Make sure that you plant only healthy bulbs to prevent disease.

To stave off diseases on your amaryllis, make sure that the bulbs you purchase or divide are in good health. Do not pot or plant any bulbs that show signs of rot, or have reddish-brown spots on the bulbs or yellow streaks on the leaves.

    Treatment

    • A hot water treatment for diseased amaryllis bulbs can sometimes help treat various problems.

There are no chemical treatments recommended for diseases on amaryllis. One nonchemical treatment to treat diseased amaryllis is to submerge the bulb, after it has been cleaned of all soil, into hot water between 104 and 114 degrees F. Thirty minutes of such treatment can help with some of the diseases that amaryllis can contract.
