How to Plant a Ranunculus Bloom

Ranunculus is also known as the Persian buttercup. This tender flowering plant is only hardy in U.S. Department of Agriculture zones 8 and 9, although it likes cool weather. In any other zone, you can plant Ranunculus in the spring and dig the tubers up in the fall to avoid killing the plant. Ranunculus grows from 2 to 24 inches high and needs full sun. The blooms come in a variety of colors, including yellow, red, pink and white.

Instructions

    • 1

Select a site with full sun and well-drained soil for the Ranunculus. Add 3 to 4 inches of compost to the soil and work it into a depth of 12 inches.

    • 2

Fill a bowl with warm water, about 80 to 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Soak the tubers in the water for two hours prior to planting.

    • 3

Dig holes in your garden bed 2 inches deep and 4 to 6 inches apart.

    • 4

Place the pointed end of the Ranunculus tubers into the hole and cover the holes with soil. Pat the soil down firmly. Plant the Ranunculus after the last frost date in your area.

    • 5

Water the area around the Ranunculus tubers well for five to seven minutes.
