Can Daffodils Grow Through Established Turf?

Daffodils, prized for their hardiness and ability to grow in many conditions, will grow even through established turf in well-drained soil. This does not usually conflict with lawn mowing, as daffodils bloom before most grasses have broken dormancy, though you may need to make some allowances for post-bloom care.
  1. How to Plant

    • Plant daffodil bulbs in the fall before the soil has frozen. They should be planted 6 to 8 inches deep with the pointed side facing upwards. They can be planted individually or in masses.

    Daffodil Maintenance

    • The only care that daffodils generally need is a light fertilization once the new growth begins to emerge in the spring. An all-purpose or bulb-specific fertilizer can be scattered around the clumps or individual daffodils. Make sure to keep them well irrigated if the usual spring rains do not come.

    Post-Bloom Care

    • Ideally, daffodils should not be cut back after blooming. The stems should be allowed to make as much food as the bulbs need to store for the upcoming winter and subsequent season. This can be hard to accomplish if the daffodils are growing through turf as likely the turf will need to be cut. If you can wait to cut the turf until after the daffodils are through with their cycle, or cut around areas with daffodil foliage, it will be better for the following year's blooms.
