How to Trim a Tiger Lily

Although some confusion exists in the gardening world, garden lilies and daylilies are distinctively different plants with individual growing habits and appearances. The standard orange daylily and the bright orange tiger lily share some characteristics, but these plants have specific differences that set them apart. When you grow tiger lilies, trim them throughout the growing season to keep them healthy and attractive.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the blossoms from the tiger lily when they begin to wither and become unsightly. Clip the blossoms off just beneath the stem at the point where the blossom and stem join or cut the blossom off lower on the stem where the stem intersects with leaves. Either method works equally well.

    • 2

Place the spent blossoms into the bucket to collect them as you trim. Never leave plant refuse on the soil beneath a plant because it can lead to disease and decay problems.

    • 3

Discard the blossoms in the trash or in a compost pile.

    • 4

Continue to remove all blossoms on the tiger lilies as they wither. Vigilant blossom removal enables the plant to direct energy to the bulb, which will produce more blooms the next growing season.

    • 5

Cut off the tiger lilies just above the soil level at the end of the growing season. When the tiger lily stems and foliage wither and turn yellow, use the pruning shears to trim the stems off and discard the stems in the trash or compost bin.
