How to Care for Himalayan Lilies

Himalayan lily (Cardiocrinum giganteum), often called giant Himalayan lily, is a summer flowering bulb that can reach mature heights up to 15 feet tall. It grows best in U.S. Department of Agriculture hardiness zones 7 through 10. This plant slowly grows larger each year, but it will not generate blossoms for at least the first three and up to seven seasons after planting. Each plant will then produce up to 20, large fragrant white trumpet-like flowers before dying. Caring for Himalayan lilies begins with selecting the ideal growing location.

  Plant Himalayan lilies in locations with moist, well-drained soil and partial shade. Choose sites that will accommodate the fully-grown plant -- 15 feet tall and 3 feet wide.

  Add a 3-inch layer of organic matter, such as rotted leaves and compost, to enrich the soil in the planting site. Mix this into the soil to at least 6 inches.
