Select a sunny area in the garden in well-draining soil, enriched with organic matter. If necessary, supplement the soil by mixing equal parts soil, perlite and peat moss.
Dig a hole for the bulb using a garden spade. Ultimately, you want the top of the bulb 6 inches below the surface of the soil.
Remove the Easter lily from its container and plant the bulb in the hole and backfill with the soil.
Remove the flower using gardening shears, but leave the leaves and stems attached.
Water the soil thoroughly, without making it muddy.
Cut the stem to the ground in the fall, after the stem dies.
Cover the area around the bulb with mulch in late fall, when the soil freezes. Don't remove the mulch until spring, when new growth appears.
