How to Grow Daffodils in Water for Kids

Growing bulbs indoors is a hands-on activity that teaches kids about how flowers grow. If grown in water, kids can also see roots grow from the bottom of the bulbs. Bulbs can be forced to grow and bloom indoors any time of year, usually in soil. However, paper-white daffodils (Narcissus tazetta) are easily forced in water and don't require chilling like some bulbs, making the process quicker for kids.

Instructions

    • 1

Fill a shallow bowl or container about two-thirds of the way with pebbles. Kids may prefer to use colorful marbles instead. Choose a clear bowl or container so the kids can see the bulbs form roots in the water.

    • 2

Arrange the bulbs on the pebbles or marbles so they are approximately 1/2 an inch apart. Fill in the gaps between the bulbs with more pebbles and marbles to anchor them and ensure that the bottoms of the bulbs make contact with the water.

    • 3

Pour water in the bowl or container until it touches the bottom of the daffodil bulbs. If desired, use colored water for decorative purposes and possibly to turn the blooms a different color.

    • 4

Move the daffodil bulbs to a cool, dark location, such as a garage, for three to four weeks. Replenish the water as necessary. When green growth shoots out from the bulbs, move them to a sunny location.
