How to Grow Daffodils in Containers to Bloom Inside in March

Daffodils grow from large bulbs that bloom in spring. They do well in containers, provided you use fairly large ones -- at least 2 gallons in size. To make daffodils bloom in March, plant them in the same way you would plant daffodils that you want to bloom later in spring, at their normal time. The difference lies in exposing the planted bulbs to a chilly temperature for several months and keeping them in a dark area.

  Combine 1 part perlite with 3 parts of sterilized potting soil. Sprinkle 1 to 2 inches of this mixture into the bottom of each pot and then add a pinch of 0-10-10 fertilizer. Fill each pot to within about 2 inches of the top.

  Set three to four daffodil bulbs on the soil surface at evenly spaced intervals. Fill each pot with additional soil and perlite, leaving the tip of each bulb exposed. Water each pot well, until the water runs out the drainage hole.

  Move your pots into a dark area where the temperature will remain at 40 to 45 degrees F, and leave them for three to four months. Water the pots on a regular basis for the entire time they are in the cold, dark area.

  Move your pots to a spot where the temperature is 50 to 60 degrees and the amount of light is low or medium. Leave them in this environment for four or five days. If your bulbs have sprouted during cold storage, shoots will be yellow: when you expose them to low light, they will turn green.

  Transfer your pots to an area with bright light with a temperature of between 60 and 70 degrees F. Your daffodils should begin to bloom three or four weeks later.
