Late Blooming Lily Varieties

Lilies (Lilium) have about 80 different species with hundreds of cultivars that grow from 2 feet to 8 feet tall. Some lily varieties will put on a colorful flower display late in the season, so that your garden has color at the end of August and into September after the early season lilies have already finished flowering.
  1. Asiatic Lilies

    • Asiatic lilies are hardy lilies with some varieties blooming as late as September. These lilies are generally not fragrant, but the showy flowers make up for the lack of fragrance. Late blooming lilies in this group include tiger lilies. Tiger lilies have spotted colored flowers in red, orange, yellow or white. Plants grow 2 to 3 feet tall.

    Trumpet Lilies

    • Trumpet lilies have a distinctive flower that is shaped like a trumpet. Plants have a strong fragrance that fills the air. Trumpet lily varieties that bloom in August include Mabel Violet, Pink Perfection and Golden Splendor. Plants will grow up to 6 feet tall, with colorful flowers in yellow, apricot, pink, gold or white.

    Oriental Lilies

    • Oriental lilies have 9-inch-diameter flowers with a spicy, sweet fragrance. These lilies will bloom towards the end of August into September. Plants included in the Oriental group include Journey’s End, Stargazer and Casa Blanca. Dwarf varieties that grow 24 inches tall include Pixie, Little Love and Mona Lisa. Oriental varieties will grow 18 inches to 6 feet tall, with colorful flowers including red, rose, pink or white.

    Orienpet Lilies

    • The orienpet lilies are a cross between trumpet and oriental lilies, which gives the plants the persistence of the trumpet lily and the beauty of the oriental lilies. Flowers can measure 12 inches in diameter when the plants bloom at the end of August or September. Plants that are included in this group of late-blooming lilies include Peter the Great, Scheherazade and Arabesque.
