How to Grow Persian White Poppies

The Papaver somniferum, or Persian White plant, is a member of the Breadseed poppy family. The plant is generally grown in North America for both ornamental and culinary purposes. Not only is a fully grown White Persian beautiful to look at, but its poppy seeds are used for certain types of bread products, such as bagels. Like any other plant, growing a Persian White successfully depends on knowing when to plant the seed and when to provide water.

Instructions

    • 1

Plant your Persian White seeds in either a fertilized garden bed or a large pot (with enough room for the plant's roots). Scatter the seeds where you wish for them to grow, then cover the seeds with a fine layer of soil. For optimal results, plant the seeds between September and April.

    • 2

Water the seeds every day until they germinate, which should happen after a week has passed. Water the germinated seeds twice a week to prevent rot.

    • 3

Water the plants every day once they develop their leaves. Apply fertilizer every three waterings. Stop watering once the plant's petals appear, and only water the plant when it is wilting. When fully gown, the plant should possess a height of roughly 1 meter.
