How to Run a Stump Grinder

A stump grinder removes the stump left after a tree is cut down. A grinder makes the job of removing a tree stump easier than digging the stump out by hand. Grinders operate with a gas engine that propels the grinding blade, which spins around very quickly. You can rent a walk-behind stump grinder from your local equipment store. Small stump grinders can be transported in the back of a truck; larger ones must be hauled on a trailer. Stump grinders must be used with care and safety in mind to protect the operator and those nearby.

  Move the stump grinder next to the stump. Put on your safety glasses and gloves. Remove any rocks and debris from around the stump.

  Raise the grinding wheel up off the ground, using the level on the handle of the grinder. Start the stump grinder. Most stump grinders have a start and stop button and do not require pulling a coil rope to start.

  Hold onto the grinder's handles. Walk the grinder to the edge of the stump. Set the grinding wheel down on the stump, using the level.

  Move the stump grinder back and forth slowly, using the handles, as the wheel grinds the stump. Advance the wheel by moving the grinder forward to continue grinding on the remaining stump. Continue doing this until the stump is ground away.

  Raise the grinding wheel when you are finished, using the level. Back the grinder up out of the pile of wood chips.

  Turn off the grinder. Lower the grinding wheel.
