Equipment That Is Required for a Landscaping Business

If you like working outdoors, owning a landscaping business may be ideal for you. You'll need basic tools, but which tools will depend on the type of work you'll do for your customers. Don't overspend on tools. Rent or buy as you go to keep up your cash flow.
  1. Hand Tools

    • Start with basic hand tools like round and flat-nosed shovels, sharpshooters, a wheel barrow, leaf and garden rakes, garage brooms and a post hole digger, as well as safety equipment like goggles, gloves and water coolers. Don't forget to make sure your crew wears hats and sun protection while working out in the heat.

    Basic Power Tools

    • Commercial mowers are critical to your success. Home-grade equipment just will not stand up to hard use like commercial power tools. Stand-on self-propelled mowers are highly maneuverable and fast and make good first purchases. You'll also need gas-fueled leaf blowers, line trimmers, edgers, hedge trimmers and a trailer to load your equipment on.

    Advanced Power Tools

    • Don't buy more than you need at first. Rent things you don't use every day. Buy what you need as you go. As you grow, you may add riding mowers, skid steer loaders, edging machines, concrete extruders, and supplies of herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, pesticides and insecticides. As you expand your business, you may add snow- and ice-removal tools, and equipment for hanging Christmas and other holiday decorations.

    Electronic Tools

    • There are two electronic items you will want to consider. Buy a computer and software for keeping your books or hire a bookkeeping service if you don't want to do your own accounting. As you become very busy, consider purchasing a GPS system for your truck to help you find your way to jobs quickly without losing time.
