How to Plug a Tubeless Tire

Tubeless tires are manufactured for many types of lawn and garden equipment, as well as all-terrain vehicles. Over time you might notice that a tire has gone flat and needs repair. Nails, sharp rocks, and other foreign objects might be the culprits. Fortunately, a tubeless tire can be plugged using a universal tire plug kit. These kits are made with a variety of plug sizes and can be purchased at auto-parts or hardware stores.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the tire from the axle. Rotate the tire until you find the hole. A soapy water mixture can be helpful when locating small puncture holes. Rub the mixture over the tire to find the bubbling hole.

    • 2

Choose a tire plug that closely matches the size of the hole. The plug should be slightly bigger rather than smaller than the punctured hole.

    • 3

Plunge the tire reaming tool into and out of the hole. Use three to four repetitions to file the inside of the hole smooth. The tire reaming tool resembles a round file with a "T" shaped handle on top of it.

    • 4

Thread the tire plug through the needle eye on the plug insertion tool. Insert the tool and one end of the tire plug into the tire. Twist the needle tool to loose the plug and pull the tool free. Squeeze the tire cement into the hole around the plug. Cut the top of the plug down to 1/8-inch high. Squeeze more tire cement to form a patch over the plug.

    • 5

Inflate the tire. Allow the tire cement to dry. For over-sized holes or holes that have sharp jagged edges use a can of tubeless tire sealant as an additional method to plugging the hole. Use the manufacturers instructions for tubeless tire sealant.
