Push Lawn Mower Safety Tips

Push lawn mowers are a convenient way for homeowners to mow their lawns without investing in a riding mower. But using a push lawn mower can be dangerous if you do not follow proper lawn mower safety precautions, according to the website of engine manufacturer Briggs and Stratton. If you use a push lawn mower to get your lawn looking clean, be sure you understand how to stay safe in the process.
  1. Gasoline Safety

    • Avoid having a lit cigarette or other flame around when filling the push mower gas tank, warns the website of engine manufacturer Briggs and Stratton. When you store gas for your mower, use a gasoline can that has a UL, FM or CSA safety label on it. Store the gasoline in a dry place away from your home. Do not store gasoline in your basement. Always fill the mower's gas tank outside, and fill it before you begin using the mower for the day. Never try to put gas in a mower that is hot from being used.

    Clothing

    • Wear pants that cling to your legs while mowing, and avoid free-flowing pant legs, the website of the Sedgwick County, KS Fire District 1 cautions. Wear safety goggles when mowing because of the risk of the mower throwing debris into your eyes. Avoid sandals when mowing. Wear closed-toe footwear made of a strong material, such as leather or canvas, for maximum protection from flying debris.

    Children

    • Children under the age of 12 should never operate a push mower on their own, according to the heath-care experts at the Healthy Children website. Encourage your children to stay indoors when you mow the lawn, or have another adult available for supervision. If children are near the area, be careful when backing up with your push mower.

    Starting the Mower

    • Start the mower on a level and solid surface. Always keep your hands and feet clear of the discharge area when you start the mower. Debris attached to the blade could fly out when the mower starts, and could cause injury. Do not attempt to start the mower on grass that has not yet been mowed. If you need to start the mower while still in the lawn, do it on an area you have already mowed.
