Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the water and electricity to the irrigation system.

    • 2

Dig the soil away from the existing sprinkler head with a shovel or trowel. You are less likely to damage pipes using a trowel. Expose the pipes that connect to the sprinkler head.

    • 3

Inspect the pipes on either side of the irrigation head for damage or leaks. Make repairs to the pipes as necessary. Cut through the pipe with a hacksaw and replace the defective pipe with new pipe. Secure the new pipe with pipe connectors sealed with pipe glue.

    • 4

Unscrew the old nozzle from its position and set it aside. Wrap Teflon tape around the male threads of a new Rain Bird 1800 nozzle. Twist the new nozzle into position. Try to align the arrow on top of the nozzle so it's closest to the outer edge of the lawn. This gives you the broadest spray range from the nozzle.

    • 5

Turn the water on to check the nozzle. A few drips back down the nozzle are normal. Tighten the nozzle more if you see more than drips. Turn the water off. Fill in the dirt under and around the new nozzle. Tamp it into position.

    • 6

Check the water flow again. Once you know of adjustments you may need to make, turn the water back off. Rotate the watering stem by pulling it straight up and turning it by hand to change the direction of the nozzle. Release the nozzle so it can settle back into position below ground. Adjust the distance of the spray by rotating the screw in the top of the Rain Bird 1800 nozzle. Turn the screw clockwise to reduce the flow.

Continue installing Rain Bird nozzles following the above steps. Turn the water and electricity back on when you finish the project.
