How to Fell a Leaning Tree

Felling a tree that is already leaning has some advantages, as you already know which direction the tree will fall. A leaning tree is dangerous because a strong wind or storm could blow it over at an inopportune time. If you fell the tree yourself, you control the conditions in which the tree falls and can do it in a safe environment.

Instructions

    • 1

Remove anything in the way of the leaning tree. It will fall in the direction it is leaning.

    • 2

Turn on your chainsaw or pick up your ax.

    • 3

Make a back cut on the side of the tree that is not leaning toward the ground. The back cut should be about 1/2 the width of the tree. If the tree does not fall after the back cut, make a slightly deeper back cut until the tree does start to fall.

    • 4

Run in the opposite direction of the falling tree to avoid being hit.
