DIY Above Ground Sprinkler Systems

Every homeowner desires to feel the lush green grass beneath his feet as he walks onto his front lawn. He can achieve that by hauling heavy buckets of water and pouring the water all over his lawn and garden, stand for hours spraying the hose in a random pattern or dash out of the house in his pajamas to reset the tractor sprinkler that fell off its track.

Watering your lawn can be a frustrating and time consuming activity. Underground sprinkler systems cost thousands of dollars to install. Instead, install a lower cost, less hassle option -- a do-it-yourself above ground irrigation system.

Things You'll Need

  • 3 Garden hoses, two of which should be the same size, either 6 feet or 15 feet long
  • 3 Pop-up, rotary or pulsating sprinklers with unit to unit connections
  • Hose faucet manifold
  • Sprinkler timer (optional)

Instructions

    • 1
The male end of a hose is readily apparent.

Screw the male end -- the end with the exposed threads -- of one hose into the side connector of a sprinkler. Be sure this hose is long enough to reach the zone you wish to water.

    • 2

Remove the plastic cap from the male connector on your sprinkler. This connector is on the opposite side of where you connected the hose.

    • 3
The male end of the hose is connected to the female side of sprinkler.

Tighten the female end of one of the 6 foot hoses to the male connector on the sprinkler by turning the end clockwise. Use a 15 foot hose if you desire greater spacing between sprinkler heads.

    • 4

Affix the other end of the 6 foot hose to the next sprinkler. Attach the male end of the hose to the female side of your sprinkler.

    • 5

Continue to piece together hoses and sprinklers by alternately connecting male hose ends to female sprinkler connections and female hose ends to male sprinkler connections until all three sprinkler heads are connected. Do not remove the plastic cap on final sprinkler.

Attach the faucet manifold or timer directly to the house spigot.

Screw the faucet manifold to the house spigot. The faucet manifold allows you to attach multiple above-ground sprinkler systems to reach different zones in your yard.

    • 7

Screw the female end of original hose to faucet manifold.

    • 8

Place sprinklers in desired places around your yard.

    • 9

Add a sprinkler timer to your system by screwing the timer onto house spigot before attaching the faucet manifold. A sprinkler timer allows you to automatically set watering time.
