How to Change the Sprocket on a Poulan 1950 Chain Saw

The Poulan 1950 chain saw is one of the more durable and reliable brands of chain saws on the market. However, they do need servicing from time to time. One part of your chain saw that may need to be changed is its clutch drum and sprocket. A chain saw's sprocket and clutch drum powers the chain. It also prevents the chain from moving when your chain saw is idling. Over time, debris can clog and wear away at this assembly, and it may need to be replaced.

Things You'll Need

  • Socket set
  • Nut driver set
  • Spark plug wrench
  • Poulan clutch removal tool

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the two bolts holding your chain saw's blade cover in place. Remove the bolts with the socket set. Set the cover to the side. This will also loosen your blade and bar. Remove them both and set them aside.

    • 2

Loosen the two nuts holding the cover in place below your chain saw's handle. Use the nut driver to remove these two nuts. Pulling this cover off will expose the spark plug assembly

    • 3

Pull the spark plug wire off and remove the spark plug with the spark plug wrench.

    • 4

Slip the two ends of the clutch removal tool into the matching clutch assembly slots. Place your socket over the head of the clutch removal tool and turn the clutch clockwise to remove it.

    • 5

Remove the clutch from the drive shaft and then remove the washer beneath it. Once it is out of the way, remove the old clutch drum and sprocket assembly. Also clean out any chunks of dirt or debris in the housing.

    • 6

Slide the new clutch drum and sprocket assembly back onto the drive shaft and into place. Replace the washer and clutch.

    • 7

Tighten the clutch back into place on the reverse thread by turning your ratchet counter-clockwise.

    • 8

Replace the spark plug and spark plug wire and then re-bolt the cover back into place.

    • 9

Put bar, chain and blade cover back into place and tighten them down with the socket set.
