How to Kill Mushrooms With Mulch

Mushrooms growing wild destroy a healthy garden. You can use chemicals to kill mushrooms but they are often hazardous to the environment and plants around them. A more natural killer to use with mushrooms is mulch. Mulch is a protective cover of chips of wood that is placed over soil and used to provide nutrients, retain moisture and suppress weed growth. Lime fertilizer added to mulch increases the acidity levels and kills the mushrooms.

Instructions

    • 1

Wear gardening gloves to protect your hands from poisonous mushrooms and fungus.

    • 2

Turn the mushrooms over using a hand spade or shovel.

    • 3

Add lime fertilizer to the mulch. Refer to the instructions of the fertilizer for the

correct dosage. The acidity of the lime kills mushrooms and fungus.

    • 4

Spread the mulch mixture over the area that has mushroom growth. Once you cover the

mushrooms with mulch and lime, they can no longer receive the nutrients needed to grow and eventually they die off.

    • 5

Continue to reapply mulch and lime fertilizer to cover the mushrooms until you have killed them.
