Husqvarna 455 Rancher Chain Saw Specifications

The Husqvarna 455 Rancher chain saw is a strong saw for occasional-use wood cutters who need the power and durability of a professional model without the cost. Husqvarna gave the 455 Rancher a blue landowner color code, which makes it a mid-range chainsaw for landowners who do demanding, though intermittent, wood cutting. It incorporates all of Husqvarna's safety and power features for mid-range models including X-Torq, Start Smart and LowVib technology. In 2010, it retailed for around $400.
  1. Engine

    • The 455 has a 55.5cc, 3.5-horsepower engine that provides enough torque to cut through trees with sizable bores and hardwoods such as maple, ash, alder and beech, while still manageable enough to use for branch cutting and trimming. It boasts 2,700 rpm idling speed, a 9,600 rpm full-throttle cutting speed and holds enough gasoline with its 0.9 US pint fuel tank to provide extended cutting time without the need to refuel. Its adjustable oil pump allows you to control the oil flow for different cutting variations and weather conditions.

    Ergonomics

    • Husqvarna understands the physical toll a chain saw causes on bodies, especially shoulders, arms and backs. The company designed the 455 (and other models as well) with ergonomic features to lessen the strain. At 13.2 lbs. the 455 Rancher is not a light saw, but it is also not too heavy to use for extended periods of time if you practice good sawing posture -- legs and arms bent, back straight and shoulders squared to the cutting logs. The 455 Rancher incorporates Husqvarna's patented LowVib cutting system that effectively separates the cutting vibration between the engine and handles and thus lower vibration strain. It also has the Smart Start system designed to make starting easier and faster. The front handle is offset at 7 degrees to make cutting more natural and reduce fatigue.

    Efficiency

    • The centrifugal air cleaning system keeps dust and large debris from clogging the air filter to enhance the saw's efficiency with fewer stops to change the filter. The 455 Rancher uses a toolless chain-tensioning system so you can tighten and loosen without having to find your tools. Its X-Torq system, originally developed in 2004 for the older 445 model, lowers fuel consumption up to 20 percent and emissions by 60 percent over other chainsaws without such technology.

    Considerations

    • The 455 Rancher is a powerful chainsaw. Always wear protective eye wear, chainsaw pants and steel-toed boots when using this machine and do a maintenance check of your saw before you begin cutting, especially with the chain tension, chain lubrication and air cleaner. For safer and more efficient cutting also check to make sure the chain is sharp. Do not try to cut something larger than your experience allows, and if you do not have sufficient experience at felling your own trees then consult a professional first.
