The chain saw consists of two basic parts: a motor housing and an oblong bar. The tool's bar protrudes from the motor housing and a sharp-toothed chain rotates around the bar. The chain saw is powerful enough to cut through thick branches, limbs and even tree trunks. However, the chain saw's long bar is unwieldy and not suitable for detail work or maneuvering in tight spaces.
The hedge trimmer consists of two basic parts: a set of trimming blades and a motor housing. The hedge trimmer's blades are lined with large, tooth-like points and sandwiched one on top of the other. The blades shift back and forth to catch and sever small branches and foliage from the surface of hedges and shrubbery. Unlike the chain saw, the hedge trimmer cannot cut through thick or tough branches. However, the hedge trimmer is capable of creating clean, detailed surface work on hedges and maneuvering in tight spaces.
Consider the type and size of plants in your yard before choosing a chain saw or hedge trimmer. If your yard contains many trees that frequently require maintenance, a chain saw might suit your needs. If your yard contains few trees, but many shrubs and hedges, a hedge trimmer could be the best tool for the job.
