The modern lawnmower rotates a sharpened blade near ground level to shear through blades of grass. Lawnmowers cut entire fields of grass to a uniform height, creating a clean appearance. Lawnmowers consist of four basic components: the cutting blade, motor, push-handle and wheels. Lawnmower motors may be powered by either electricity or gas.
The string trimmer is a multi-purpose trimming tool used to cut grass at a lawn's edge or border. The string trimmer slices through blades of grass with a rapidly rotating, plastic string. The string trimmer consists of three basic parts: a handle, a motor and plastic string. The trimmer's motor rests at the end of its long handle, and its string protrudes from the underside of the motor's housing. To use a string trimmer, position the rotating string just above ground level.
The spreader tool evenly distributes grass seed, fertilizer and herbicides across a lawn. The spreader looks like a funnel with a hand crank attached to its side. To use a spreader, fill the open top of the tool with seed, fertilizer or herbicide granules and turn the hand crank. Each turn of the crank propels an even portion of seed, fertilizer or herbicide from the front of the spreader.
