How to Keep Birds From Building Nests on Window Sills

Some people think there is nothing more beautiful than waking up to the sounds of birds chirping in the morning. However, when the bird is living right outside your window, the constant sound of chirping can be quite annoying, especially if baby birds are chirping. There are ways to relocate the nest without causing harm to the birds. Installing bird spikes will prevent the birds from building a nest on the window sill in the future.

Instructions

    • 1
Carefully move nests to another spot.

Walk around the house and look for nests on all window sills. If nests are present, you need to carefully move them to another spot.

    • 2
      Put on disposable rubber gloves.

Put on disposable gloves and use a ladder to reach each window sill. Check the nest for any eggs or baby birds. Move the nest if it's empty and relocate it to a tree or bush, making sure that it is high off the ground, away from predators. If the nest has eggs or birds, wait until it's empty to avoid being pecked at or attacked by a mother bird trying to protect its eggs or young.

Clean off the sill with a broom.

Clean off the window sill area with a broom. Remove all debris prior to installing the bird spikes. Clean the area with a sponge dipped in a bucket of mild soap and water. Once the sill is clean and dry, measure the sill to determine how many spikes are needed. Spikes are available in sections of one to eight inches in length.

Apply a thin strip of glue to the base of the spike.

Apply a thin strip of glue to the base of the spike and place the spike on the window sill. Apply pressure on the spike until it sets. The amount of pressure and length of time varies according to the glue being used so be sure to read the label.
